Meeting the challenges of Choosing Health

Jenny Wiggins, Consumer Industries Correspondent, Financial Times

Jenny Wiggins opened the Conference by stating that the level of debate was at unprecedented levels, and expressing her doubts that Ofcom’s ruling would cease this debate. She noted that debate was being watched by the US and Europe and and that the World Health Organisation would be meeting in Istanbul on 15 November to discuss possible regulation and the “commercialisation of ‘junk’ foods”.

Caroline Flint MP, Minister for Public Health - “Current Government thinking”

The Minister for Public Health, Caroline Flint MP, commenced the day’s proceedings with remarks on the current challenges for public health that were no longer a question of epidemics and vaccinations, but of personal lifestyle choices. The Minister said that whilst advertising in itself was not the only cause of obesity and that restrictions were not the only answer, it did have a part to play.... Full report (pdf)

Melanie Leech, Director General, FDF - “Delivering on industry’s commitments”

Melanie Leech reminded the conference that food and drink was the single largest manufacturing sector in the UK which was worth £70bn and employed 500,000 people. She explained that it was an industry of huge importance to the economy as well as possessing some of the country’s best known and loved brand names..... Full report (pdf)
