International conference to debate kids ad ban

Senior figures from across Europe’s advertising industry will be attending a major international conference in London next Tuesday (23 November) on threats against advertising to children.

The 100 plus delegates, consisting of advertisers, agencies and the commercial media, as well as regulators, academics and senior civil servants, will hear a series of high-profile speakers from across the European Union, including:

  • Axel Edling, the Swedish Consumer Ombudsman responsible for policing Sweden’s ban on advertising to the under-12s;
  • Martin Bowley, Chief Executive of Carlton Sales in the UK;
  • Aviva Silver, of the European Commission (EC), who will be giving an overview of the EC’s policy on the issue; and
  • Eddie Abadjis, General Manager of the toy company Matel SA in Greece, where the TV advertising of toys is banned from 7am to 10pm.

The day’s proceedings will be rounded-up by Rupert Howell, President of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, who will be chairing a discussion session in the afternoon.

‘TV Advertising and Children: ethics and public policy’, is being organised by the Children’s Programme, the advertising industry’s EU-level campaign to counter calls for a ban on advertising to children, in conjunction with the Advertising Association’s Food Advertising Unit. It is being held in the Harvey Goodwin Suite, Church House Conference Centre, Dean’s Yard, Westminster, London SW1.
